Fring to bring free video calls to Android?

1

Last week Fring launched their free VOIP service for Android and the early reviews were positive. Fring allows users to make free VoIP calls over Skype, MSN, GoogleTalk and via hundreds of SIP providers.

It looks like they have been hard at work because we just received word Fring will now focus on video calls. Free video calls are now supported on Symbian devices and support is coming soon for other smartphone platforms.

No Android phones currently have front facing camera, but that could change in 2010. In a previous post I talked about video calls coming to Android and many of our European readers told us they have had such a service for years. It has yet to catch on in the United States, but maybe Fring and some news phones will change that.

Are video calls something you would like to see on Android phones?

Life360 Raises $750k To Keep Your Family And Valuables Safe

Posted by admin on Tuesday, 24 November, 2009

Source: techcrunch.com

Life360 and it’s Android Medical Application(see below), a startup that looks to help families keep their loved ones (and their identities) safe, has closed a $750,000 funding round with investors including Seraph Group, LaunchCapital, Founders Fund (via FF Angel), the Band of Angels, and Mark Goines. The service also recently launched to the public at TechCrunch50’s DemoPit.

Life360 offers a suite of services related to safety and security, which are designed to help prevent everything from losing your phone to losing your personal identity. One example is the site’s Emergency ID service, which provides parents with cards/bracelets for their children that instructs first responders to call a designated phone number in the event of an emergency. Calling that number will activate the service and automatically blast a message to any emergency contacts.

The company’s goal isn’t necessarily to provide all of these services itself. Rather, it wants to offer a set of core products built in-house, alongside services that are offered by third parties. Life360 works to integrate these services into their dashboard, and makes it easy to sign up for them because it can pre-populate key information. This seems like a smart play given how fragmented/confusing the privacy and security market can be, though I’m wondering if Life360 might have some trouble convincing well established services to play ball (especially if they’re going to be listed alongside competitors).

We’ve briefly covered Life360 a couple times before, when the company won the first Android Developer Challenge (good for a $300,000 award) and then again when it was part of this summer’s fbFund REV.

AT&T WIRELESS CAPABILITIES FACILITATE REAL-TIME PATIENT DIAGNOSIS AND HOME-BASED CARE

Patients who have chronic wounds and may be immobilized can now receive treatment in their homes by experienced clinicians who collaborate remotely with certified wound care specialists miles away. Wound Technology Network is using wireless technology services from AT&T* and empowering healthcare professionals with smart mobile devices to diagnose and prescribe treatments for patients with chronic wounds anytime, anywhere.

Under a two year agreement with AT&T, Wound Technology Network will equip its clinical staff including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants across South Florida and Southern California with HTC FUZE(TM) smart mobile devices(working under Windows Mobile or Android OS) when providing care in patient’s homes. Clinical staff will use the devices to access an application developed by iVisit, which creates videoconferencing tools for mobile devices and PCs, and speak live with a wound care specialist at Wound Technology Network’s tele-health center who will assist them to assess their patients’ wounds and perform the necessary treatment. To aid in the treatment process, clinical staff will also capture images of the patient’s wounds using the HTC FUZE(TM) and transmit the images to the wound care specialists to upload onto an electronic medical record which is immediately faxed to the patient’s primary care physician.

Until now, immobile patients and often those with chronic wounds relied heavily upon transport services for access to treatment, which often accounted for delayed diagnosis, prolonged hospital visits, and unnecessarily high treatment costs. Now having clinicians equipped with smart mobile devices, immobile patients have access to expert specialists for real-time diagnosis and treatment.

“Here at Wound Technology Network, we recognize that consistently delivering the highest quality wound care is difficult, but with the help of AT&T, we are able to deliver all the advantages of physician based services while we are treating patients in the comfort of their home,” said George Pollack, Chief Technology Officer. “Not only are our specialists able to deliver on-site quality care in real-time, they are able to aid in significantly minimizing the healing time of patients and the overall cost of their treatment.”
